People with learning disabilities can learn; they just learn differently. They need to be taught in ways that address those differences.
Academic Intervention at Lee Pesky Learning Center is:
- Research Based.
- Direct. Students work one-on-one with trained educators.
- Explicit. Objectives are clearly stated and follow a defined instructional sequence. Individualized instruction is based on an evaluation and on-going assessments. Repetition and appropriate pacing are critical to helping students reach automaticity. Students are active participants in learning how to learn. We help students understand why they learn the way they do.
- Systematic. Lessons follow a strategically planned sequence for instruction that builds on previously taught information. The content moves from simple to complex, with clear, concise objectives that are driven by ongoing assessment. We use age-appropriate sequences and programs that are current and reflect what research has shown is most important to helping students learn.
- Multi-sensory. The instruction involves sight, sound, touch, and movement. Students build words with moveable letters, trace sounds as they say them, and touch felt squares as they recall sequences from a story. Multi-sensory instruction is fun and engaging, and it works.
When I don’t know a word, I just tap it out! Student
More about Academic Intervention at Lee Pesky Learning Center:
- During the school year, students typically attend hourly sessions twice per week. We recommend a minimum of 48-60 sessions to give students the most benefit of the individualized instruction.
- Curriculum Based Assessments (such as DIBELS and AIMSweb) are used regularly to provide information about each student’s progress toward his or her goals.
- Post-testing is done after students complete 50 hours of instruction. Parents then meet with their child’s specialist to discuss the results.
Academic Intervention services are available at all of our locations.
